Security Printing

Banknotes, Cheques, Passports, Tamper-evident labels, Security tapes, Product authentication, Stock certificates, Postage stamps and identity cards.

Packagers cannot be too careful these days. In times of bioterrorism, tampering, counterfeiting and shoplifting, no area is immune from these brand-damaging, sales-sapping activities. Fortunately, there are steps they can take to protect their products from harm and keep brand equity intact. Several innovative advancements designed to counter threats to brands and consumers will be featured at Pack Expo Las Vegas 2003 in October at the Las Vegas Convention Center. Sponsored by the Packaging Machinery Manufacturers Institute (PMMI), many of these new technologies will be displayed as part of a special Containers & Materials Pavilion.

Prepress in Printing

Prepress is a term used in printing that describes the process that files go through before printing actually takes place.

It's the stage where they're prepared and edited, where graphics are checked, and all proofing is performed to ensure the information is correct and arranged so that it will print just the way the customer desires. For example, if PACKZ wants the logo in the upper left hand corner, then during the prepress stage, the print company will make sure it's properly arranged so that it doesn't get cut off during printing.

Some of the typical prepress tasks can be performed by the graphic artist or designer who designed the project, but this isn’t required. Graphic artists usually apply crop marks and convert the color of modes of their photos to anticipate any color shifts, but much of the prepress process is handled by experienced operators at commercial printing companies or reprographic companies using proprietary software programs that are customized to the companies’ specific requirements.

Flexography printing and printing products

Flexography is a type of a rotary in-line printing method. Derived from the Latin word “Flexus”, literally translated as “bending”, flexo printing is used to print on any flexible material

. These flexible materials can vary from plastics, paper, metallic films to cellophane. Printing variable repeat lengths, using a broad range of inks and a wide variety of substrates is possible with flexo printing.

Flexography started as a rubber stamp printing method. In 1980, Bibby, Baron and Sons built the first patented flexo press in Liverpool. Since then, a lot of innovations have revolutionized the flexographic printing industry. Today, almost 60% of the printed packaging industry comprises of flexo printing. Modern flexographic printing presses also have a lamination and die cutting process integrated in them. This is done to protect the product’s final shape and size. Due to the rising demand for flexible packaging, flexo industry is growing rapidly.

Finishing and converting process

Finishing refers to all the activities that are performed on printed material after printing.

Converting includes binding, the fastening of individual sheets together, and decorative processes such as die-stamping, embossing or laminating.
Finishing can be:
an in-line process – which means that units attached to the end of the printing press perform the finishing operations. This is typically the case with web presses as well as many digital presses.
an off-line process – which means that printing and finishing are completely separate processes.
The overview below list major finishing processes.

The Importance of Sustainability

ti-layout-media-right

Sustainability has become a big deal. Modern environmental concerns have changed consumers’ focus, and the printing industry has taken notice. To help combat waste and pollution, manufacturers are now producing equipment that doesn’t contain solvent-based coatings, and also offering new, sustainable board types.
